Moving house with your family is exciting, but also extremely exhausting. Whether you’re upgrading to a bigger home, seeking a better school catchment area, or moving into one of the many new build homes across the UK, the logistics and emotional weight of a move can be a lot. Here’s a quick guide to walk you through what to expect before, during, and just after your move, so your family can settle in with minimal stress and fuss.

Help kids with the transition

It’s understandable for children to feel anxious or unsettled about a move. After all, they’re saying goodbye to familiar surroundings, routines, and even friends. Help them adjust by letting them know what’s going on and getting them involved. Show them pictures of the new house, talk about the new school or park nearby, and listen to their worries without judgement or brushing them aside (especially if they have an anxious personality). You might even let them choose their new bedroom furnishings or some fun decorative items like wall art or lamps.

Plan ahead for a stress-free moving day

It’s moving day, so expect at least a bit of chaos. But it doesn’t have to be a disaster. The most important thing is to research and book your removals team well in advance. Also, label all boxes clearly (especially those with essentials like toiletries or medicines that you’ll need immediately upon arrival). If you really want to give yourself some peace of mind on the day, set aside a box with snacks, chargers, and small toys or games. You’ll be glad you did. Also, try to maintain some structure in the day for your kids, such as setting a time and space for regular mealtimes.

Make the new neighbourhood feel like home

Once the boxes are unpacked, it’s time to stretch your legs and explore the area. Walk or cycle around to discover local parks, shops, and cafés. Introduce yourself to your immediate neighbours and others on your streets – they’ll be a great source of local knowledge about everything from bin collection days to exercise groups.

Check utilities and home safety

You’ve finally made the move. But before you breathe a sigh of relief, walk around your new home with a practical eye. Test all smoke alarms, find the fuse box, and make sure that electricity, water, and heating are working properly. Double-check energy tariffs and register with new providers if necessary.

Embrace life in your new family home

A successful family move is all about being prepared and flexible. Talk things through with your kids, plan ahead, and remember that even if there’s a bit of upheaval, this new chapter can quickly become a happy one.
