It’s official: the holiday season is upon us. And what better way to embrace festive cheer than at a magical Christmas market? Sip mulled wine and indulge in a traditional Bratwurst as you meander through the bustling stalls. You might just find a beautiful new ornament for the tree or some tasty treats for that party you’re hosting.
Sound tempting? Thought so! Here are some of the best Christmas markets in the north that are sure to be merry and bright.
Leeds: Christkindelmarkt
Friday 8th November to Saturday 21st December
What to expect: this fabulous German Christmas market is hugely popular thanks to its abundance of magical charm. Millennium Square is transformed into a winter wonderland packed full of authentic wooden stalls, as well as a cosy restaurant and fantastic Ski Hutte bar. There’s something for everyone: adults can enjoy mulled wine and Christmas shopping while little ones can hop on the carousel or attend the children’s shows on the main stage.
How to get there: located at Millennium Square in Leeds,the market is easy to reach by bus, train or car.If you’re getting the train, the square is only a 10-minute walk from the station. There are also buses that stop close to the market on the Headrow – you can check the timetable here.
Newcastle: Christmas Market
16th November to 16th December 2019
What to expect: this supersize Christmas market is spread across Newcastle city centre, so there’s no shortage of festive fun to be had. Those with kids should head to Blackett street which is home to a giant toboggan and action-packed fairground rides, including a balloon ride and traditional carousel. On Northumberland street you can wander through the many stalls – there’s cheeses, alcohol, crafts and jewellery all up for grabs!
How to get there: as the market is located right in the city centre, it’s fairly accessible to all. If you’re making a special trip from the south, there’s lots of trains from London Kings Cross to Newcastle that will get you there in around 3 hours. There’s also plenty of buses and many car parks close by.
Manchester: Christmas Market
8th November to 22nd December (dependent on location)
What to expect: right in the heart of buzzing Manchester you’ll find over 300 charming stalls packed full yuletide treats. Whether you’re hoping to find some fantastic Christmas gifts, sample delicious delicacies or enjoy a tipple or two with friends, there’s plenty to keep you occupied. Why not sample some of the mouth-watering food from around the world, such as Spanish paella, British hog roast or Bavarian stew?
How to get there: the large scale of the Christmas markets in Manchester mean they’re spread out across the city. However, the main event is at Albert Square in the centre which is conveniently close to major train stations including Victoria and Deansgate. There’s also hop on hop off bus services and trams that will take you right to the action.
The only thing left to do now is to decide when to go! Race you to the hot chocolate stand!
