For many Brits, Southeast Asia conjures up images of bustling megacities, ancient temples and steaming bowls of delicious street food. But this vast continent also boasts a treasure trove of stunning islands, perfect for those seeking a tropical escape.
Keen to know more about where you can go? Here are some of the most scenic island-hopping destinations in Asia.
The Philippines
The Philippines is an island nation unlike any other, boasting over 7,000 islands. Located in Palawan, El Nido is a jewel in the crown, offering a paradise for kayakers with hidden lagoons and some of the most breath-taking beaches in the world. Further north, you can explore the historical sites and serene beaches of Coron, where World War II shipwrecks rest beneath crystal-clear waters.
For an off-the-beaten-path experience, head to the Siargao Island. This laid-back spot is a surfer’s haven and has some of the best waves in the Philippines.
Thailand
Thailand is a classic island-hopping destination for a reason. Discover the famous Phi Phi Islands with its towering limestone cliffs, as well as Maya Bay, which is considered one of the world’s best beaches.
For a more relaxed vibe, visit the laid-back charm of Koh Lanta, with its long, sandy beaches and chilled atmosphere. If luxury is more your style, indulge in the world-class resorts and spas of Koh Samui. Adventure seekers may feel more at home in Koh Tao, a haven for scuba diving and snorkelling enthusiasts.
Vietnam
Vietnam boasts a stunning coastline and has a growing reputation for island adventures. However, it’s still relatively undiscovered compared to its Southeast Asian neighbours, which makes a Vietnam tour a great option for travellers wanting something unique.
Phu Quoc Island, also known as “Pearl Island,” is a firm favourite, with immaculate beaches, vivid coral reefs, and a burgeoning nightlife scene. For history fanatics, a visit to Con Dao Island is a must – once a French penal colony, the island is now a peaceful retreat with a fascinating past. Elsewhere, Cat Ba Island in Ha Long Bay is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – come here to marvel at the dramatic limestone pillars and emerald waters.
Malaysia
Langkawi is an archipelago off the west coast of Malaysia that blends natural beauty with cultural heritage. When you’re not unwinding on picture-perfect beaches, you could be out exploring lush rainforests full of wildlife or riding on the Langkawi Sky Cable to see panoramic views.
If you want to veer off the tourist trail, go the Perhentian Islands. The turquoise waters here house magnificent coral reefs and diverse marine life, making it a top diving and snorkelling location. You can also reach Penang Island by getting a ferry from Langkawi. Key attractions
here include George Town, known for its Hawker markets full of street food and the breathtaking Kek Lok Si Temple.
Indonesia
Indonesia’s vast island chain offers a kaleidoscope of experiences for island-hoppers and statistics show that there were approximately 335,209 UK visitors to Indonesia in 2023 alone. Bali is a must-visit. It’s best known for its rich cultural heritage, world-class surfing and impressive volcanic landscapes. You can do everything from trekking through rice paddies to witnessing ancient Hindu ceremonies in between relaxing on pristine beaches.
For those preferring somewhere a little quieter, head to the Raja Ampat archipelago, a remote paradise known for its amazing coral reefs. Meanwhile, the Gili Islands are a short boat ride from Lombok and offer a laid-back atmosphere.
