Hello, hello, so it’s a new month and I spent my bank holiday clearing out my home which means there’s space for lots of new pieces. My office is stripped back to a blank canvas and my brain is whirring with all the new features I want to add to make it mine. I’m going to start the summer season with a little office upgrade as I spend most of my time in this room at the moment and it needs a few changes and updates to get it to a place where I’m totally happy with it. I don’t want to do anything wild, I’ll be keeping my muted grey walls and my long work desk and ergonomic chair but I am flirting with the idea of some wall art, some soft furnishings and some accessories to make it more functional while sticking to a clean, modern aesthetic. Here’s what I’ll be adding and a few key trends I’m loving. Leave me a comment with any office upgrade tips or ideas, please!
Aesthetically Pleasing Backdrops
After 1076 zoom calls I’m painfully aware of how boring the back wall of my office is. I want something eye-catching but not distracting. I think because my home office doubles up as a guest room, I’d like to keep the back wall quite minimalistic and pretty. I’d either like a little set of moon-shaped mirrors placed across this wall or I’d like a trio of frames to break up the bare wall. I don’t know about you but I’m loving line drawings at the moment.
A Retro Fridge
Ok, so what I really want in my office is a Moet vending machine but I recently googled one and they are a whopping 5k. I’ve always had an obsession with fridges and I’d really like a pink or grey Smeg fridge to keep me hydrated throughout the day. I’d fill it with iced coffees, coconut water and maybe a mini bottle of champers or two. Oh and snacks. I live in a townhouse-style house which has three floors and one of my biggest bugbears is how far my office is from the fridge/kettle etc.
A Neon Sign
When I’m in full decor update mode, Pinterest is always there to inspire me and when I look at the office-related pins I save I see a lot of neon signs and I always want one to go above my writing space. A cute quote maybe?
Functional Shelves and Accessories
I’ve noticed that home office trends are focussing on functional accessories rather than being all about aesthetics and of course I think this is because so many people have had to work from home during the pandemic. I’ve had friends who have invested in functional items to increase productivity and comfort when working from their home office with purchases like fancy office screens (great if you have two of you working from the same home office), task lights, and office chairs that improve posture. I’d love to say I want shelves to balance books on but I actually want a little surface for all of my favourite candles. Fig scents are my current obsession not to mention my Neom scent pod that literally helps me find my zen.
A Creative Memo Board
I like to scribble my ideas down and I like them to be visible. I’d love a chalkboard or a mirrored surface on one of the walls that I could scribble on my to-do list on each day and remove it when I’ve completed all my tasks. I might experiment with a cork wall that I can pin things to, kind of like a giant vision board. I need a cool space to hang my calendar too. I’m old school when it comes to calendars as I have a complex custody schedule and like it where I can see it. Ideas on a postcard for this one!
What’s your favourite home office trend right now?
This post was a collaboration but my love for an impromtu office makeover is 100% my own.
