I’ll be honest, I rarely have time to style my hair, but I recently curled it on a whim and fell back in love with my go-to styling products that I used before my days were a relay of nursery pickups and parent admin. As a mum, it’s honestly too tempting to throw my hair up on top of my head (the term Mum Bun didn’t pop out of the sky) and start plowing through my to-do list without a second thought but I got so many compliments on my curls that it made me want to put in a little more effort into my day-to-day hairstyle. I have super straight hair and I’m not the best at curling it but I thought I’d show you the result of the new GHD Platinum Plus Stylers (kindly gifted) and give you a run-through of the styling lotions and potions I use to protect my hair when I do curl it, because, well breakage…
The GHD Styler
Real talk. Is there even another brand of styler out there? Now, let me first say that I’m not simply singing the praises of this styler because it was sent to me by a PR. Yes, I’ve been gifted the item but I had no obligation to post about it. I’ve been using GHDs for over 20 years and for me there isn’t another haircare brand I would trust my hair with when it comes to quality and longevity. I remember putting the pink ones on my Christmas list (didn’t we all?) when I was 16 and then the white ones ten years later. So, when the GHD Platinum Plus and Professional Styler landed in my lap, I was quite literally over the moon and I felt the same excitement that I felt when I unwrapped them years ago.
Back then there was only one type of styler available but now the brand offer a number of options which are all together more advanced than the simple straighteners of old. For a start they have a rounded barrel which means you can achieve actual curls rather than bends like before. I’m over the moon with the results!
Let’s Talk Hair Products
Now, I always dream of having a dresser sprinkled with opulent hair styling products but the truth is, I’m always a little hesitant when it comes to taking the plunge when purchasing a luxury hair styling product. While I’m happy to try out different shampoos and conditioners, curling sprays, fancy serums, and finishing products always felt a bit overindulgent and extravagant.
As a blogger, I’m used to seeing styling lotions that are £40 a pop banded around on blogs and Insta-stories and it’s easy to get sucked into that idea that everyone has 456 different masks and serums tucked away in their beauty collection and want decked out shelves bursting with brands like Oribe, Living Proof and OUAI ourselves. I’m an impulsive shopper, it’s the reason I’m not allowed in Space NK unsupervised because before I know it I’ve racked up a bill that’s hundreds of pounds in my shopping basket and I have to be tackled before I make it to the till. We don’t all live in a world where we can justify a texturizing spray that’s £25 but I’m all for investing in hair care that actually makes a difference to my locks and lets me live my best life. So, if that’s an outrageously overpriced hair perfector, so be it. I get giddy when I visit my friend in Dubai who not only has the most insane hair and beauty collection, that a visit to her apartment is almost as fun as a trip to Sephora. I’m not going to lie, when she said I could borrow anything I wanted, I was just as excited by a trip to her bathroom as I was about our impending trip to the Burj Khalifa!
I also find that I now put haircare in the self-care bracket of life, and I’m more inclined to spend ten minutes in the bath with a hair mask on and a G and T than jet off on holiday or to a fancy spa, I now find that is the type of therapeutic activity that fits with my lifestyle. I love how spending more than 3 seconds in the shower is now a luxury now I’m a parent but I do think that smearing a fancy treatment onto my roots or applying a fancy spray to my towel-dried hair helps to quieten the internal noise that comes with looking after a small human. It seems I have the art of justifying a luxury purchase down. That being said, everyone is different and so is their hair so what works for me and my hair might not work wonders on yours. So, I guess what I’m saying is, go out and buy the fancy hair products if they make you happy and don’t if they don’t. You do you.
I’ve always been blessed with naturally straight, shiny-ish hair so I don’t religiously straighten my hair even though I used to do it daily to make sure it looked sleek in between washes. so, I’ve never felt the need to splurge on all the smoothing, de-frizzing options on the market, however, after years of bleach, I am naturally curious about those moisturizing masks, treatments, and products that promise to repair breakage. I need volume, moisture and lots of it. So, here’s a few of the items on my wish list that I’ll be guilty of splurging on in the near future.
