Ugh. Breakage. I know, I know, if I’m going to bleach my hair on the regular, I can hardly complain about breakage, but the fact is, I’ve bleached my hair for years and it’s only since becoming a mum that my hair has gone through a number of changes and I’m finding breakage and hair loss an issue. I think with hair breakage, it’s very much out of sight, out of mind, but there’s nothing like watching your hair come out in droves in your hand after washing it to make you take action. So, I thought I’d document my experience with breakage and let you in on a few things I’m going to try to reacquaint myself with my thick, voluminous locks.
*Forever Blonde range by Paul Mitchell and my trusty tangle teezer
I’m switching up my haircare regime
It’s fair to say that when it comes to hair care, I’ve got a type. I’ve stayed loyal to one haircare brand for years, but recently I just don’t think it’s cutting it. My hair looked limp, lifeless and lacklustre even after washing and blowdrying it and let’s face it who has time to do this with a baby? When Salon Success heard about my breakage issues they sent me a little package filled with Paul Mitchell goodies. I wasn’t expecting miracles and let’s face it, it wasn’t going to make my hair grow back in a couple of weeks but I noticed a huge improvement to the condition. After 2 weeks it felt stronger, thicker and full of life. The Forever Blonde range is sulfate free and designed to repair damaged hair and replenish lost moisture. The real miracle worker is the dramatic repair spray which is the perfect pre-blowdry potion. Switching from a hair care collection that is designed for your hair colour to a collection that is specially made for bleached hair might not solve all of your hair problems but it is a step in the right direction.
*Satin Pillow case
I’m swapping my pillow case
I’ve heard people raving about satin pillowcases but I hadn’t thought about trying one until I experienced breakage. It’s amazing what weird and wonderful things you will try when you suddenly have bangs that you never asked for. The majority of my breakage is located at the back and having a satin pillowcase is one method you can try to protect that area while sleeping. I was kindly gifted one of these cute Morning Glamour pillowcases to try out from MakeupboxLDN and I have definitely benefited from less friction. I’ve heard pillowcases like this can even work wonders on wrinkles! Did I mention there are leopard print designs? Win Win!
I’m banning bobbles
So, I noticed my breakage really escalated when I started increasing my sessions at the gym and as a result tying my hair up in a bobble. Yes, I tried the invisi-bobbles that promise to be kinder to your hair than regular bobbles but I’ve noticed a significant improvement to my hair after banning bobbles and using clips instead. I’m tempted to even try a silk scrunchie! If you’ve tried them and think they are worth a go, drop me a comment at the end of this post.
I’m Incorporating Olaplex
I get my hair coloured every 6-8 weeks and I always make sure that my colourist uses Olaplex when applying my highlights. I then follow this up with an at-home Olaplex treatment once per week to keep my hair in the best condition it can be in between salon visits.
I’m trying a hair supplement
I attended an event a few weeks ago and received a *Vity Box in the goody bag and while taking a hair supplement has never really crossed my mind before, I am willing to try anything to repair my breakage. I think diet and vitamins are a simple way to fast track your way to healthy hair. Vitamins can not only help with breakage but they also promote hair growth. A vitamin subscription like this costs £9.95 and provides a daily dose of patented collagen, keratin & hyaluronic acid, with the bonus of anti-aging boosters. This supplement isn’t just great for your hair but your skin and nails which are both departments that I need help with currently.
